Go to the right To Navigate!
Hellos!
I've finally started on my final cross disciplinary subject today.
When I first receive the time table for this school discovery, I thought to myself that " Effective Internet Research" would be dead boring. I mean, what will anyone expect from a subject that requires you to do tons of research?! But after the first lesson, I would say that I thought wrong.
Ms Farida, our lecturer had the class started with an ice-breaking game. It is obvious that we had fun with the exercise as we started exchanging email and started chatting about anything under the sun in MSN. With her help, we are a step closer to having a stronger bond with one another.
When the ice had pretty much melted, Ms Faridah started the lectures. Indeed i must say that I was overloaded with the sudden flood of information. But thanks to the pre-printed notes and the help of my fellow friends, I am able to better understand the lesson.
Here are some of the things that I've learnt during today's lesson:
#1. The difference between the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW)
So basically the Internet is the one that links all the networks together and allows people to communicate through the means of using a computer to one another, whereas the World Wide Web is the one that shares and provides information. Therefore, if there isn't WWW in the Internet, It will be impossible for you to see whatever i have typed here.
Before this lesson, I've always thought that the Internet and the World Wide Web were synonymous. Somehow in my mind they were a inseparable pair as everytime I refer to the internet, I always have "www.something.com" in mind. But after this lesson, i finally understand that they are actually different things that are related to one another.
#2. Internet resources
There are various Internet resources such as blogs, wikis, forums, RSS, etc. Everyone of them functions differently, but they all serve the same purpose and that is to share information.
Some interesting takeaways from this section are the function of the RSS and the meaning behind "wiki".
RSS: I came across this abbrevation many times before but i never knew what it was until today. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it really makes retrieving of information very convenient. A RSS is whereby many updated document will appear in a single page. For instance 10 of my friends owns a blog. Instead of browsing through every now and then to check for updates, I can simply feed to their blog or "subscribe" to receive their updates all in my blog. Isn't this cool! XD.
It was also until today that i realise there is a meaning behind "wiki". "Wiki Wiki" in hawaiian is known as quick/fast. cool huh. So wikipedia is fastpedia? hahahas.
Anyway, I was told that wiki was kept open for all to share and edit information for the purpose of it is to be able to store as much information as possible and share it with as many people as possible! It is pretty amazing how wiki had expended into and how people are willing to contribute to wiki.
So to all parents out there who feels that the internet is the root of all evil, think again for the internet can be really heart warming and not to mention, it is the key to greater knowledge!
Alrights i think my post is getting to wordy but before i end my post i would like to make a disclaimer.
Disclaimer: Information in this entry is to my knowledge. It might not be accurate for what i think i know might not be correct.
